Quiet moments of reflection in Punchbowl

On Memorial Day I visited the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific to pay my respects to our fallen veterans and their families. The thousands of lei and the flags placed on each grave were powerful reminders of our respect for these veterans and their families and a reminder of the sacrifices that each of them made to our Nation.

Convention notes

I attended the Democratic Party State Convention at the Hilton Hawaiian Village facility Friday thru Sunday.  The Zuiker for Congress committee had a table display that highlighted my views on getting out of Iraq, the wasted billions in Iraq that are bankrupting our children’s future and the need to rebuild our reputation in the international community through my People to People Programs.

On Sunday morning I presented my ideas for a Common Sense Congress to a gathering of convention delegates and friends from Maui and the Big Island.  The energy shared by the delegates and all of the candidates who made presentations was truly electrifying.  Good people coming together because of a real love for their Nation.

A big mahalo and congratulations to the “party” officials who worked so tirelessly to create a smooth and informative convention.

Running update: Bringing News to Nanakuli

Location: Nanakuli  (Oahu)   -  May 19, 2006

One hour on Farrington Hwy. in Nanakuli holding signs as hard working people head off toward town.  Their morning includes fighting traffic and burning expensive gas.  Good morning Nanakuli.  Lots of positive responses to my being on the road.   Ran up the hill until I got to the Lyman Ranch gate and saw two beautiful horses.  They don’t call it ” the country” for nothing.

Then started running back toward the schools and past many residents up and out in their yards.   Passed out many of our Congressional Credit Card Bills informing residents that the Administration and Congress stuck our children with a large national debt.    Explained how Congress continues to spend more money than they take in and then leave the bill for our kids to pay.    Most persons already knew that Congress has turned the United States of America  into a “Debtor nation”.
On way down the hill I ran past the Homestead Cemetery.  Nicely maintained with flowers on most of the graves.  The work put into the maintenance of the cemetery shows respect for the elders.
Kept thinking about the ancient Hawaiians who believed that they should not pass on their problems to future generations.  Congress does just the opposite.  They spend now, give tax breaks to the most wealthy and will make our little children  pay these bills for years and years to come.
All in all a good day on the road in Nanakuli.

Return of American Forces From Iraq No Later Than January 1, 2007

Joseph Zuiker, a candidate for Congress in Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District (Democratic Primary) called today for the return of American forces in Iraq by no later than January 1, 2007. “Everyday we spill brave and honorable blood in a war thousands of miles from our shores; a war that has done nothing to keep us safe from terrorists.

In addition, this war, which is in the wrong country, is being funded on the backs of our children and grandchildren. Each billion that we waste in Iraq is being added to our national budget deficit and that deficit is going to be paid for by our children and grandchildren as they grow into adulthood.”

According to Zuiker, the wasted billions that are being thrown away in Iraq could be better used in Hawaii and the other states.

Zuiker, who is physically running throughout the 2nd Congressional district to avoid the need to accept special interest money for his campaign said, “I just finished running in the Waianae and Makaha communities. The high school students need better school books and computers. There is a need for more job training skills for at risk students and tuition assistance for parents who want to give their children a head start in early childhood learning centers. The billions we waste each day in Iraq are critically needed in Hawaii to protect our children from the terror of low paying jobs, high rents and even homelessness. That’s real terror and we need to protect ourselves from it now.”

Zuiker added “I have full confidence that our military leaders and their ability to bring back our troops safely by January 1, 2007. All we need now is a Congress that demands that they come home now. As your next Congressman, I am prepared to make that demand.”

Foot Race For Congress Begins Friday in Waianae

Friday May 5, 2006 at 10:00 a.m.

Front of Waianae High School, 85-251 Farrington Hwy. Waianae, Hawaii 96792

Joe Zuiker for CongressThe true Race for a Common Sense Congress begins on Friday in Waianae, said Second Congressional District Democratic candidate Joe Zuiker. Zuiker is literally running his ideas around the district as he campaigns for Congress.

“I am starting my race for Congress from Waianae because of my belief that there is a direct connection between the billions of dollars that we are wasting in the War on Iraq and the many needs of the hard working people in Waianae and throughout the Second Congressional District.

“From the first steps that I take on Friday during my run through Waianae,” said Zuiker, “I will be reminded that Iraq’s wasted billions could have been better used in our own communities. On Friday I will see several thousand people sleeping on our beaches. I will see local health clinics filled to capacity. I will see school after school that could use newer books, more computers and more programs to help young adults get decent paying jobs in the very near future.”

Wasted billions in the wrong country won’t bring financial security to families in Waianae or elsewhere in Hawaii, said Zuiker.

“Since I refuse to take money from special interests, running my ideas around the Second District is the only thing I can do to spread those ideas,” he said. “From Friday on I will take several days a week and literally run around the Second Congressional District. I hope to spread my realistic ideas for bringing common sense back to Congress.”

Zuiker hopes to cover several miles per day with his runs. People can follow him by visiting his website at http://www.runjoerun4.us.
